Tartar is hardened plaque that brushing cannot remove. It can inflame the gums and, over time, lead to bone loss.
For most people a check-up and cleaning twice a year is enough. People with gum problems or who smoke may need shorter intervals.
Brushing twice a day and using floss or interdental brushes helps. If you notice bleeding gums, come in without waiting.
